Using NHANES III (1988-1994) the authors estimate the risk of having type 2 diabetes, gallbladder disease, coronary heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or osteoarthritis for normal weight, overweight, obese groups.  Risk increased with BMI for all diseases except coronary hearth disease in men and cholesterol in both sexes.

The authors estimated prevalence ratios, which gives, for example, the likelihood of an obese person having the particular disease relative to a person in the reference group (normal weight).

The prevalence ratios for people with BMI>40 and under age 55 were highest for for type 2 diabetes for men (18.08) and women (12.87) and gallbladder disease for men (21.11) and women (5.2).  Prevalence ratios were generally higher in those under 55 than those over 55.
