Poet of the Day

One of my favorite Cascadian poets just won the BC Lieutenant-Governor’s Award, as the Vancouver Sun reports.

It’s Robert Bringhurst, who lives on Quadra Island and has devoted several decades to studying Haida myth.

Here’s a stanza from his 1985 collection The Beauty of Weapons, from a poem called “The Song of Ptahhotep”:

Good speech is rarer than jade. It is rarer
than greenstone, yet may be found among girls
at the grindstone, found among shepards
alone in the hills.
